Maria Johansdotter is a brave woman who will do anything to get to live her life as an independent person and musician. She follows her heart’s voice and faces the consequences of her actions with pride. On the judge’s question whether she is male or female she answers she is both, however more of a man. Today, over 300 years later, the time has come to tell the remarkable story of Mary Johansdotter / Magnus Johansson, whose destiny begins in the late 17th century in Föglö in Åland and ends a few decades later in Stockholm.
The opera is directed by Suzanne Osten (SE), one of today’s most prominent and unique directors, known for transforming each production into something new and exciting. The music is composed by Karolina Eiríksdóttir (IS) and conducted by Anna-Maria Helsing (FI), both well established names in the music world. The libretto is written by Katarina Gäddnäs (ÅL) dramaturgy and adaption by Ann-Sofie Bárány (SE). Set designer Maria Antman (ÅL) has created the scene setting and the lighting designed by Mari Agge (FI). Costume design is by Minna Palmqvist (ÅL / SE).
The opera performed in Swedish and subtitled. The performance lasts about 90 minutes.
